Vitamin D :
A major function and possibly the sole function of vit.D is related to its role in the intestinal and cellular absorption of calcium. Calcium, phosphorus and vit D are closely interrelated physiologically. A deficiency of any one or a severe imbalance of the three may lead to rickets in young or osteomalacia in

mature animals, stiffness, weak & bent bones & posterior paralysis. It is important for proper bone growth and ossification.

Vitamin E
It is necessary for fertility. It acts as an antioxidant. It is required for better immune response. Deficiency causes muscular dystrophy, infertility. Chicks deficient in vit E shows signs of encephalomalacia (out starched legs with toes flexed), exudative diathesis (oedema of the inside thighs under the skin), embryonic mortality and reduced hatchability.

After intramuscular injection, the vitamins are quickly and completely absorbed.
Vitamin E is transported in the circulatory system via beta lipoproteins. It is distributed to all tissue and is stored in adipose tissue. Vitamin E metabolized and excreted into the bile. Vitamin A absorption, utilization and storage into liver is enhanced by vitamin E.
Vitamin A + D3 + E (ADEVET) has long lasting prophylactic action due to the high concentration of the vitamin A and D3.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) acts as co-enzyme for transketolase, necessary for normal fatty acid and cholesterol production, thereby affecting neuronal membrane synthesis and integrity. Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) plays a key role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids and fats and is central to the processes of mitochondrial respiration and oxidative phosphorylation.

Niacinamide (Vit-B3) is essential for normal carbohydrate metabolism

Vitamim B5 is a component of coenzyme A (CoA), a molecule that is necessary for numerous vital chemical reactions to occur in cells. It is essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, as well as for the synthesis of hormones and cholesterol.

Vitamim B6-The primary role of vitamin B6 is to act as a co-enzyme to many other enzymes in the body that are involved predominantly in metabolism.Vitamin B6 is involved in the following metabolic processes of amino acid, glucose and lipid metabolism and neurotransmitter synthesis. Calcium – most of the calcium (approximately 98 %) in the body is present in bones. The remaining small amount play critical roles in a variety of metabolic functions throughout all tissues of the body. Calcium is required for the normal secretion of neurotransmitters like acetylcholine. In ruminants with hypocalcemia, the secretion of neurotransmitter at the myoneural junction is much less and thus flaccid paralysis result. (as in milk fever). Blood coagulation is dependent on calcium as a cofactor for activation of coagulation factors.

Vitamin D is also required for proper calcium metabolism and balance. Animals housed outside with access to natural, unfiltered sunlight usually have adequate levels of vitamin D3 because inactive vitamin D precursors in the skin are converted to vitamin D3, when the skin is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. Herbivores that have limited exposure to UV light should receive supplemental vitamin D3. An inadequate levels of vitamin D can result in nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism, fibrous osteodystrophy, osteomalacia, cystic calculi, cloacal calculi, and rickets. Pathologic fractures, bone deformities, and soft or deformed shells may occur.

Functions of Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin)
  • Vitamin B 12 is a water soluble vitamin with a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and for the formation of blood. It is one of the eight B vitamins. It is normally involved in the metabolism of every cell of the body, especially affecting DNA synthesis and regulation, but also fatty acid synthesis and energy production.
  • Cyanocobalamin ( Vit. B 12) is a cobalt –containing vitamin required by cells throughout the body for conversion of ribose nucleotides into deoxyribose nucleotides, a mojor step in the formation of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Thus it is an essential nutrient for nuclear maturation and cell division and deficiency of this vitamin results in generalized depression of cellular development and tissue growth.
  • Because the erythropoietic centres of the bone marrow are among the most rapidly growing and proliferating tissues, inadequate amounts of cyanocobalamin are sepecially manifested by decreases in erythrocyte production.
  • In adult ruminants vitamin B12 synthesis by gastrointestinal flora is adequate but the requirement increases with stress, growth, gestation or lactation. Gastrointestinal diseases may impair enteric microbial vitamin B12 synthesis and subsequent absorption. Oral antibiotics may also increase its dietary requirement by inhibiting normal microfloral production.

Tephrosia purpurea

Leaves are tonic to intestines and a appetizer. According to Ayurveda, plant is digestible, anthelmintic and antipyretic.
Eclipta alba
Part used – whole plant.
Advantages It has antihepatotoxic activity. It gives symptomatic relief in epigastric pain, nausea and vomiting . The leaf extract is powerful liver tonic and rejuvenative. It has a profound antihepatotoxic activity. A cardiodepressant activity was also observed in it when used for hepatic congestion. It is used as remedy for the treatment of bleeding, haemoptysis, haematuria and itching, hepatitis, diphtheria and diarrhea. It is a cooling and restorative herb, which supports the mind, nerves, live and eyes. Plant has traditional external uses like in eczema and dermatitis.
Andrographis paniculata
Parts used – leaves and stems.
Advantages It possesses antihepatotoxic, antibiotic, antimalarial, antihepatic, anti thrombogenic anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties. It is also used as an immunostimulant agent. The plant extract exhibits antityphoid and antifungal activities. The plant extract increases the cytotoxic activity of lymphocytes against cancer cells, hence has a potential for being developed as a cancer therapeutic agent.
Terminalia chebula
Part used – mature fruits.
Advantages It is a laxative, nutritive and appetizing. It is a antiflatulent and used in abdominal colic. It is effective in skin diseases, pruritus and heart diseases. It is a brain tonic, promotes vision and a rejuvenative tonic. It is used as expectorant. It is used in urinary disorders, intermittent fever, abdominal tumours and as alterative.
Ocimum sanctum – commonly known as Tulsi
Part used – whole plant.
Advantages It has antioxidant properties. It is used in Ayurvedic remedies for common colds, stomach disorders, inflammation ,heart disease, various forms of poisoning and malaria. Recent studies suggest that Tulsi may be a COX-2 inhibitor, like many modern painkillers. It is also effective in diabetes by reducing blood glucose levels. Studies showed that it reduces the total cholesterol levels. Tulsi has beneficial effect on blood glucose level due to its antioxidant properties.
Drug action
Alterative, antihepatotoxic, rejuvenative, immunostimulant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic

Administration & dosages:
To be given orally.
Cattle and Buffaloes 5-10 g.once daily for 10 days.

Mastitis is the inflammation of mammary gland (regardless of cause) which leads to:-
  • Physical chemical & usually bacteriological changes in milk with the presence of clots & large number of leukocytes.
  • Pathological changes in glandular tissue indicated by swelling, heat, pain & indurations (to become hard).

Treatment Object
The object, goal or the line of treatment should be:
  • To remove infection from the quarter.
  • Returning of milk to normal composition.
  • To improve milk yield by removal of congestion in the gland & inflammatory debris from the duct system.

  • Use standard dose of Antibiotic / Antibacterial or sulfonanides eg. Amikin Inj. Sulphatrim Inj. or Inj. Cephatin. (May use higher doses then normal)
  • Udder infusion, with intramammary antibacterial/antiseptic preparation.
  • Local application & massage with some anti inflammatory /analgesic ointment.
  • Local fomentation if so required and advised by the veterinarian.

Important Points
  • While going for udder infusion, strict hygiene is necessary
  • Complete emptying of quarter before infusion by the parenteral injection of oxytocin is advised.
  • Cefoperazone at a low dose rate of 250 mg. per infusion is effective against wide range of bacteria with single treatment.

Supportive Therapy
  • Parenteral Inj. of large quantity of isotonic fluids containing glucose & antihistaminic drugs.
  • Application of Cold (crushed ice).
  • Vitamin E often supplemented with selenium, 21 days before expected calving date as a prophylexis is useful.
  • Use of M-n-M 60 gm. / day for 3-5 days as supportive therapy is very important.
  • Regular use of 60 gm. / day M-n-M during last 2 weeks of drying period will help to 80% reduction in clinical mastitis.

An abundant supply of Phosphorus ensures the functioning of striated muscles during prolonged & heavy work.
Tonolon acts not only on skeletal muscles but also stimulate smooth muscle (Uterus, Vagina and bladder) and has a tonic action on the myocardium. It has a marked regulatory effect on acute and chronic metabolic disorders.
Tonolon is a raborant & tonic in general metabolic disorders, support for treatment for infertility and to promote callus formation in fractures. Phosphorus plays an important role in metabolism, in the basic constituents of the body such as phosphates and nuclic acids.

Pharmacodynamic properties 
Phosphorus is one of the fundamentally important elements of the body which is involved in many vital processes. Tonolon contains the aromatic phosphorus compound Toldimphos which falls between phosphorus and phosphoric acid in the stages of oxidation in the body.

Toldimphos does not replace deficient phosphorus but stimulates metabolism and :
  • increases calcium concentration in blood without simultaneous administration of  calcium preparations.

Toldimfos is rapidly absorbed and distributed in the body. In cattle, maximal plasma concentrations are observed within 10 to 20 minutes after intramuscular administration.. It is nontoxic & has no harmful side effect. Elimination occurs mainly via the urinary pathway It is execrated in the urine within 24-36 hrs. Repeated dosing does not lead to bioaccumulation of the product.

Elimination experiments in dogs have shown that almost 90% of the substance was recovered in urine 4 hours after intravenous injection and 8 hours after intramuscular injection. After 24 hours, 93 to 97% excretion occurred. Toldimphos was excreted unchanged in dogs.  

  • Inj. TONOLON has a synergistic effect when given in conjunction with Calcium, Vit. D3 & Vit. B12 i.e. CALFOSVET Liquid; 100ml daily orally. Calfosvet contains calcium, phosphorus, vit D3 and vit. B12.
  • Vitamin D3 in CALFOSVET helps in assimilation and utilization of Phosphorus & Calcium.
  • Vitamin B12 in Calfosvet is envolved in metabolism of propionic acid in ruminants and act as an extrinsic factor of an erythrocyte maturation factor.
  • Inj. TONOLON also has a synergistic effect when given in conjunction with Copper & Cobalt i.e. Vets Cu-Co tab; 4 tab daily. Vets Cu-Co contains copper and cobalt.
  • Cobalt deficiency leads to vitamin B12 deficiency and also it acts as a Co-factor in assimilation of Iron into Hemoglobin.
  • Copper is required for synthesis of the Haem-moiety of Hemoglobin.

Special precautions for use in animals 
Observe aseptic precautions during administration throughout the course of therapy. 

a) In Acute Conditions: Toldimfos 10mg / kg bwt. Or Inj. Tonolon 1ml / 20 kg b.wt. In severe cases where rapid absorption is required the dosage may be given as half by intravenous injection and half by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection. Multiple injection sites may be used. Dosage to be repeated to clinical effect. 
b) In Chronic Conditions:- Inj. Tonolon 1ml / 40 kg bwt. on alternative day for 5-10 injections.
